Bruk It Down

Ethnic Boom ‘n Chime Band – Iguana Creek (from VA – Shine Eye Girl 1994)

Brukdown, sort of the Belizean answer to Calypso with a lot more accordion, has never really been a widely recorded style of music, thus finding anything digital aside from a few field recordings and Youtube videos is nary. Like Carnival road marches, Go-Go shows, and footwork battles, it’s better experienced from the performative aspect anyways, even if the closest you can get to the experience is through a computer screen. Shine Eye Girl from the Mexican Corason label is the only Brukdown compilation I’ve been able to find so far, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s not going to float your World Music 2.0 boat, but if the only music you listen to from Latin America has synths in it I don’t trust you anyways.
