Ahmed Janka Nabay and his band need your help with funding their upcoming American tour and SXSW dates. For those not familiar with him, Janka plays his own “modernized” bubu, a traditional Muslim style of large group bamboo flute music from his native Sierra Leone. If you have the means, please kick a few dollars his way via Kickstarter so him and the band can have a safe journey from the East Coast to Austin. For your listening pleasure, below is one of his most famous tapes, Lek U Culture, only released in Sierra Leone. “Lek U Culture” means “like your culture” in Krio, and is a song Janka wrote about Africans loving their own culture in the face of Westernization, which you can hear him speak on in the audio clip above.
